The Illuminate Project: Sacred Threads - Stories we almost forgot
The Language of Light
Written by Shazia Osman

Bismillah ar-Rahman ar-Raheem
Welcome to my latest blog entry. Today I’ve been thinking of the depth and importance of light.
Light is something we so often take for granted. It’s simply there - spilling through a window, glimmering on water, flickering from a candle. Yet, the more I paint, the more I realise that light carries a language of its own. It speaks to the soul.
In my artwork, I find myself drawn to the golden hues of dawn, the softness of twilight, and those sudden bursts of brilliance that break through even the heaviest of skies. These are not just colours on canvas - they are reminders. Reminders that even when shadows stretch long, light is never lost.
Allah tells us in the Qur’an:
“Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth…” (Surah An-Nur, 24:35)
This verse (Ayah of Nur) has always touched me deeply. Light is not just something created - it is a Divine attribute. Every ray of sunlight, every flicker of hope, every spark of clarity in the heart is a reflection of that eternal Light.
There have been days in my practice when I’ve struggled to pick up a brush. Days that felt heavy, where inspiration seemed hidden. And yet, even in those moments, light would find its way through - in the warmth of a morning prayer, in the glow of a lamp on my sketchbook, in the quiet assurance that darkness is never absolute.
Light whispers to us: I am here. Keep going. Keep trusting.
Reflection for you: This week, I invite you to notice light in your own life. Where does it show up for you? Not only in the physical sense, but in your spiritual journey too. Perhaps in the smile of a loved one, in an answered prayer, or in the simple relief of being able to breathe deeply after a long day.
Light surrounds us - but it also lives within us. May we keep learning its language together. Ameen
